This spring’s weather has created an ideal setup for algae blooms to begin appearing in our rivers, lakes, and ponds. Here are the key numbers for the Fort Wayne area:
- April 2026: We received 5.52 inches of rain — well above the normal average of 3.74 inches.
- May 2026 (through late May): Only 2.6 inches of rain recorded so far, compared to the normal 4.5 inches.
- May has also been about 3 degrees cooler than average.
Why This Combination is Perfect for Algae Growth
This pattern has set the stage for algae blooms now that temperatures are warming into the 80’s:
- Heavy April showers delivered a big pulse of nutrients (especially phosphorus and nitrogen) from agricultural fields, lawns, and urban runoff into local rivers (St. Mary’s and Maumee) and nearby lakes/reservoirs. This acts as the main “fertilizer” for algae blooms.
- Cool and dry May kept water temperatures lower at first and reduced flushing of those nutrients. The nutrients remained concentrated and available in the water.
- Recent warmup to ~80°F averages is now causing water temperatures to rise quickly (Maumee River currently around 60–65°F and climbing). Warm water + sunlight + calm conditions = the perfect trigger for rapid algae growth.
This is a classic pattern: heavy nutrient loading in spring followed by warming weather often leads to algae blooms in early-to-mid summer. Because Fort Wayne sits in the Maumee River watershed, these same dynamics also impact our local waters.
